Can an internet gambling site report an unpaid debt to credit bureaus?

thenewgamesource asked:

I disputed a debt with ultimatebet.com and now they threaten to report me to a collection agency. Seeing as how they are based outside the US, and online gambling is illegal in the US, what gives them legal leeway to have a collections agency come after me for an illegal debt?

Well, if you gambled online through a company outside of the US, chance’s are (no matter what is illegal WITHIN the US) you’re still responsible to pay up to these people. When you enter such information as your credit card number, name, and address, etc., you’re actually agreeing to pay in full to this company whatever funds you may owe. If you owe this company money, what sense does it make for you to dispute something you’re at fault for? Credit bureau’s are just going to investigate the situation and through it right back in your face and say you’ve authorized such thing to happen on your own. It would THEN make sense if they overcharged you and you disputed the debt, but through your question, it seems like you’re trying to get out of paying these people. They have every right to report you to a collection agency just like eBay may do the same when you owe them a certain amount of money. Countries have nothing to do with it. I once heard that in a certain country, people under the age of 21 are able to drink. Do you think since it’s illegal to drink under 21 in America the cops are going to arrest an 18 year old drinking in this certain country? I don’t think so!
