Nikolas and LakeLasVegas both gave excellent answers.

The only thing I'll add is that professional gamblers say gambling is "the toughest way to make an easy living".

In any type of gambling, there will be enormous swings. You can easily go on a losing streak that lasts several months.

Even in poker, where a skilled player can win over the long run, there are ups and downs. Phil Ivey (one of the best players in the world) said he lost $276,000 in one night!

In blackjack, the casinos will get to know you. If you win too much, they will ban you from playing blackjack.

But remember, blackjack is a negative EV game. If you don't know what that means, you shouldn't try to make a living as a gambler.

Some people pursue gambling as a career in Las Vegas, but for the vast majority it's not an activity you can do on a regular basis and expect to win.

Winning in most cases is that you didn't lose all of your money or you break even. As long as you keep playing, the casinos know that you will lose it back plus some. In fact, the best thing that can happen to you from their perspective is that you win, because they know you will come back.

Two things to think about:

1. They didn't build one of the largest gaming meccas in the world by the casino's losing.

2. Next time you visit a casino, look at how many people are playing compared to how many people there are working at the cashier. (the ratio is probably 1000 to 1).

Lived in Vegas for 4 years and seen quite a few people fall to the vices. Best advice is to go with your original plan and get a job as soon as possible.

You can beat one deck blackjack if your card counting strategy and your play are near perfect. But casinos don't do one deck anymore because a few sharp blackjack players would be very bad for business. With four or more decks, you will probably eventually go broke with blackjack.

But poker at the tables is a different story. Poker is one of the few beatable games in casinos. But to beat the casino rake AND the other players, you have to play at a very high level. By the time you learned to play well enough, you will have lost your $50000.00. Instead of playing the high stakes at the tables, deposit a few dollars in an online poker account. You can play micro stakes to learn the game. But no, at the present time, you won't be able to sustain your life through casino games or poker. Get a regular job and take time to learn the game of poker. Work your way up from micro stakes to small stakes to mid stakes to high. This will be incredibly challenging but it is one of the few ways you could ever possibly profit from a casino game.
